Disappointing GCSE results: resit, review of marking, or move on?

A missed GCSE grade feels enormous on the day and considerably smaller a year later — but only if the next step is chosen well. There are really three options, and they suit different situations.

Option 1: a review of marking

Worth considering when a result is just below a boundary and genuinely out of line with everything the school predicted. Requests go through the school (not directly to the exam board), there's usually a fee — typically refunded if the grade changes — and grades can go down as well as up, so take the school's advice seriously. Deadlines land in late September, which is sooner than it feels in August.

Option 2: resit

The main route is the November series for GCSE English Language and Maths — the two subjects where a grade 4 unlocks the most doors, and the only ones with an autumn second chance. It's a ten-week runway with a known syllabus and known past papers: a very winnable race, but not one to run casually alongside a full A-Level or college timetable without support. Other subjects generally wait for the following summer, which reframes the question as "is this grade worth a year?" — sometimes yes (a career-gating subject), often no.

Option 3: move on

Plenty of sixth forms and colleges will take a student a grade short, and plenty of routes simply don't need the missing grade. If the destination course says yes, spending the autumn patching the foundations (rather than chasing the certificate) is frequently the better investment — A-Level Maths cares what you can actually do with algebra, not what your GCSE certificate says.

How to decide in practice

Ask three questions: does any door your child actually wants require the missing grade? Is the shortfall a knowledge gap or a bad day? And what does the school advise — they've seen hundreds of these. If the answers point at a resit, book the support early: November preparation works best started in September, weekly, with someone who knows the mark scheme.

That last part is what our tutors do. Every tutor on Teachers Delivered is a qualified, experienced teacher — the people who mark and teach these specifications for a living — vetted with an Enhanced DBS and references. Find an English or Maths specialist, see their price up front, and get the resit plan started before the term takes over.

If a resit is on the cards, a GCSE Maths tutor or GCSE English Language tutor who has taught the specification can turn a few months into a different grade. Every tutor here is a qualified, DBS-checked UK teacher.
