Grammar and independent school entrance — four skills, one timetable
The 11-Plus is a selective entrance exam sat in Year 5 or the start of Year 6 for grammar and many independent schools. It typically tests four areas — English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning — and the exact format depends heavily on the region and school (GL Assessment, CEM-style, ISEB or a school's own paper).
Because Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning aren't taught in most primary schools, and because the exam is timed and competitive, preparation makes a real difference — but it should build genuine skills and confidence, not just drill past papers. When should my child start preparing?
Most families start in Year 4 or early Year 5, building steadily rather than cramming. A tutor can advise on timing after a short assessment of where your child is now.
Which format will my child sit?
It depends on the region and school — GL Assessment, a CEM-style paper, ISEB, or a school's own exam. Tell us your target schools and we'll match a tutor who prepares children for that format.
How do you prepare for Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning?
By teaching the underlying techniques for each question type, then practising them — not just handing over past papers. These are the areas where good tutoring adds the most, because schools rarely teach them.
How many sessions will my child need?
