A-Level Maths is one of the most valuable qualifications your child can hold: it's a "facilitating subject" that opens doors to engineering, sciences, economics, computing and medicine, and many competitive degrees expect or prefer it. It's also the most popular A-Level in the country — and one where the jump from GCSE catches a lot of students out.
The course is part pure maths (algebra, functions, calculus, trigonometry, proof) and part applied (mechanics and statistics), sat across three papers at the end of Year 13. The single biggest challenge is the pace and the leap in abstraction — a student who cruised through GCSE can suddenly find themselves behind. A specialist tutor keeps that gap from opening: consolidating the Year 12 foundations that everything later depends on, and building exam technique for the longer, multi-step questions.

How big is the jump from GCSE to A-Level Maths?
It's significant — the pace roughly doubles and the algebra becomes far more demanding. Students who got a grade 6 at GCSE often need to shore up their fundamentals first. A tutor's most useful early job is closing that gap before Year 12 content piles up on shaky foundations.
What's the difference between Maths and Further Maths?
Further Maths is a separate, additional A-Level taken alongside Maths — it goes deeper (complex numbers, matrices, more mechanics/statistics) and is expected for some maths and physics degrees. Many of our tutors teach both; filter or ask when you book.
Which exam boards do your tutors cover?
AQA, Edexcel (Pearson), OCR (A) and OCR (MEI). The core content is common, but the applied content and question style differ, so we match your child with a tutor who teaches their board.
How many sessions will my child need?
A weekly hour is typical, increasing around mocks and in the spring of Year 13. Students starting from a wobbly Year 12 often benefit from more intensive early support to get the foundations solid.
