Why the first half-term decides the school year (and when to book a tutor)

Most parents book a tutor after the first sign of trouble — a wobbly October parents' evening, a poor mock result in December. It's completely understandable, and it costs a term. Here's the case for deciding in September instead.

New content compounds

Maths, sciences and languages are built subjects: each half-term stands on the one before. A student who loses the thread in September isn't one topic behind by Christmas — they're carrying a wobble through everything built on top of it. The single cheapest intervention of the year is steadying the first six weeks, when the gaps are small, specific, and quick to close.

Exam years start earlier than they feel

For Years 11 and 13, the autumn term is the run-up: mocks land in November and December, and sixth-form applications and university predictions are shaped by them. A tutor who starts in September has ten weeks to influence those mocks; one hired after the mock results can only help with the retake of confidence.

The practical reason: calendars

Tutoring runs on weekly slots, and the good after-school slots go first. Booking in September isn't just pedagogically better — it's how you get the 4:30pm Tuesday that fits your family, rather than whatever's left in November. (Our tutors set their availability for the term in advance; once a weekly slot is taken, it's usually taken until Christmas.)

What "starting early" actually looks like

Not five hours a week of hothousing — typically one hour, same time every week, targeted at the subject that matters most this year. Consistency beats intensity: a steady weekly hour from September routinely outperforms a panicked burst before exams, because it fixes problems while they're still small.

Choosing well

Whoever you use, hold to the basics: a qualified teacher (not just a confident graduate), an Enhanced DBS certificate, experience in your child's exact level and exam board, and a clear price. On Teachers Delivered every tutor clears that bar before they can take a single booking — search by subject and level, compare profiles and prices, and set up the weekly slot before the September rush does it for you.

If the first half-term is the moment to act, start with the subject that worries you most: GCSE Maths, A-level Maths or 11 Plus.
