Why A-Level English Language matters
A-Level English Language moves well beyond GCSE into genuine linguistics: how language varies and changes, how it shapes and reflects power and identity, and how children acquire it. Students analyse real texts using linguistic frameworks and complete a non-examined investigation of their own. It's excellent preparation for degrees in English, linguistics, journalism, law and the social sciences.
The step up is conceptual — students need to apply terminology and theory accurately, not just respond personally. A specialist tutor helps them internalise the frameworks, write the analytical and discursive essays the papers demand, and shape a strong coursework investigation.
Every tutor on Teachers Delivered is a qualified teacher who has taught the current specification.
Applying frameworks — lexis, grammar, phonology, discourse — to unseen texts.
How language enacts and resists power in institutional and everyday contexts.
Gender, region, occupation and social group as they shape how we speak and write.
How children learn to speak, read and write, and the main theories that explain it.
How English has changed over time, and the attitudes that surround change.
An independent research project and a piece of original writing — the coursework component.
It's a proper introduction to linguistics — theory and terminology applied systematically, plus an independent investigation. Personal response alone isn't enough; a tutor helps students make the shift to analytical rigour.
AQA, Edexcel (Pearson), OCR and WJEC/Eduqas. Content and coursework requirements vary, so we match your child to a tutor who teaches their board.
