Experienced maths tutor with more than 20 years teaching
Member since September 2026
Hello, I'm Mike Hunter and I offer personal online mathematics tuition for students studying KS3, Maths and Statistics GCSEs and Further Maths. I have over 20 years of experience teaching maths in different environments, both in mainstream and in specialised schools. I am a maths graduate from the University of Leeds. I obtained my PGCE from the University of Surrey and subsequently my QTS (teaching qualifications). My approach to being a tutor is predominately structured around the individual that I am dealing with. Some students need more time and repetition to pick up the required skills to be successful in maths. This isn’t always possible in a classroom environment. Others need to move at a faster pace to access the more challenging work. Some students need a more visual approach when coming to grips with new ideas. Other thrive when given clear, concise explanations followed by a simple, straightforward piece of work to complete. There are students who like to have an element of control of what they are learning and why. Others like to be led step by step through the syllabus and rely on the teacher to guide them through. Many students like a digital and interactive approach to learning. Others like to discuss everything in detail. Some respond well to traditional teaching whilst others need non-traditional methods and resources. They all need empathy, patience, diversity, understanding and humour. They all need to engage with the tutor and this is an area where I truly believe that I really prosper. I am known for being reliable, supportive, good-humoured and very easy to get on with. Whether your child needs help with basic math skills or more advanced work, I am here to provide the support and guidance they need to excel.

Michael H. has experience supporting learners with special educational needs.
I worked for 12 years in an alternative provision centre in various roles, working extensively with pupils who struggled to succeed in mainstream schools. Adapting to individual needs is a given in such an environment. Students will generally develop trust in teaching staff that demonstrate empathy and understanding in a consistent manner combined with flexibility in teaching methodology and approach.
