I am a qualified History Teacher and highly experienced GCSE Examiner, with over ten years’ experience teaching KS3, GCSE and A-Level History at leading state schools in London and Bristol. I am an ‘Expert’ GCSE and iGCSE Examiner for Pearson Edexcel, and as a teacher, have most recently specialised in teaching the Weimar & Nazi Germany, Early Elizabeth, American West, Medicine through Time and the Historic Environment of the Western Front papers. My expertise in GCSE/IGCSE History exam skills can be applied to all other Edexcel papers and I also have experience in teaching and preparing for examination in OCR and AQA GCSE History, including the site study skills. At A-Level OCR and other exam boards such as AQA and Edexcel, I provide expert coaching and feedback to get the most of the Independent Study (coursework) unit, on topics as diverse as the Salem witch trials, to Chinese empresses, the Notting Hill Carnival, and from Vietnam to Genghis Khan. I am experienced in OCR A-Level exam technique across all paper styles and have most recently taught Civil Rights in the USA, Russia and its Rulers, African Kingdoms, the French Revolution and the rule of Napolean, the USA in the 19th Century and the Early and Later Tudors papers. I strongly believe that History can be accessible and achievable for all students and adapt my teaching style to best suit the student in front of me. From my first training with the Swiss Cottage SEN/D Champions programme with the IOE in London, I am an experienced practitioner in deploying SEN/D strategies (e.g. ASD, Dyslexia friendly, trauma informed practice) both in the classroom and online. There is no such thing as a silly question, and I always tell my students you can’t get it wrong when the skill you’re practicing is selecting the evidence to structure the historical argument you want to make! I deploy a range of strategies to build student recall, retention, and exam skills so that they become confident independent learners, whilst at the same time, not losing the fun and love of the subject! Fostering student curiosity and critical thinking to make learning meaningful are really important to me as a teacher. At GCSE/A-Level I am an expert at breaking down the large and often complex volume of content into manageable and memorable portions, practicing active recall and retention, modelling exam techniques using a visualiser and deploying past papers and other tools such as knowledge organisers so that students can make and use effective revision resources. My in-school roles have included Teaching & Learning, History Subject Lead and most recently Head of Department, with a proven track record delivering improved examination outcomes for disadvantaged and/or vulnerable learners. My pastoral role as a tutor supported students holistically and make connections to work experience, apprenticeships and navigate the UCAS system and university interview prep, including successful Oxbridge applicants. I have also recently worked as a History subject consultant to LearnAnything Ltd, an AI tutoring platform, providing History examination market insight and trends across the major exam boards at GCSE and A-Level (AQA, Edexcel, OCR), and testing the AI products. This has given me an insight into assessment criteria and exam technique beyond the exam boards for which I am already an experienced teacher and examiner.
