GCSE results day 2026: a parent's guide to what happens next

GCSE results day 2026 is Thursday 20 August, with results available from around 8am at school (or by email if your school offers it). Whatever the envelope says, most of the important decisions happen in the days after — and they go better when they're made calmly. Here's a parent's guide.

What the grades mean

GCSEs are graded 9–1. A grade 4 is a standard pass and a grade 5 a "strong pass" — the numbers sixth forms and colleges care most about. Grade 4 in English and maths matters doubly: students who don't reach it are required to continue studying those subjects post-16 until they do.

If the grades are what you hoped

Celebrate — then check the sixth-form or college offer conditions are actually met and enrolment is confirmed. If your child is starting A-Levels, the step up in September is real (see why the first half-term matters), and the strongest A-Level students are usually the ones who shore up any wobbly GCSE foundations over the autumn.

If they're not

Don't panic, and don't decide anything on the day. In order:

1. Talk to the school first. Sixth forms often have more flexibility on entry requirements than the published numbers suggest, especially for students they know.
2. Consider a review of marking if a grade sits just below a boundary and the teacher is surprised by it. Requests go through the school, there's usually a fee (typically refunded if the grade changes), and deadlines fall in late September — so ask early.
3. English or maths below a 4? There's a November resit series for GCSE English Language and Maths — a short, focused runway. Other subjects can generally only be retaken the following summer.
4. Weigh the route, not just the grade. A different sixth form, a college course, or a resit year are all legitimate paths — the right one depends on where your child wants to get to.
