GCSE English Literature is a closed-book memory and analysis challenge: students study a Shakespeare play, a 19th-century novel, a modern text and a poetry anthology, then write about them in the exam largely from memory. It rewards students who know their texts inside out and can build a persuasive, well-evidenced argument under time pressure.

The exact texts vary by school and board, but the skills don't: understanding character, theme and context, weaving in short quotations, and analysing the writer's methods.
